10:08 pm - [Sherlock: look west from London]
Title: look west from London
Fandom: Sherlock BBC
Rating: PG for anatomical pathology
Word count: 4588
Notes: This is entirely [info]apiphile's fault, as she was the one who came up with Molly is an ancient goddess in the first place. You should consider yourselves lucky I was the first to get off my arse and write it; her version would have been ten times as depressing.

Title from 'The Autopsy Garland' by the Mountain Goats.

She feels Sherlock Holmes die like someone has snapped a rubber band against the unbroken skin of her hand. )

Title: Anthem for Doomed Youth
Fandom: X-Men: First Class
Rating: PG-13 (warning for attempted sexual assault)
Word count: 12,918
Notes: This fic is a belated birthday present for [info]schiarire, without whom it would not exist. She was the one who took advantage of my weakness for OT3s and suggested that I see the film, and then write about Mystique. So I did. And I did! It's not explicitly Charles/Raven in the same way that it's Charles/Erik and Raven/Erik, but the relationship between the two of them is still the most important one, I think.

Things I never thought I'd be doing in the name of fanfic: wiki-ing the concept of the Mile High Club to see if it existed in the 60s (it did. you're welcome.) The Magritte painting referred to herein is Black Magic; it's one of my favourite works of art and I have a big print of it on my wall, so maybe my interest in Mystique was inevitable :)

The implied timeline in the film makes NO bloody sense so I've fiddled with it a bit -- not in any important ways, just enough to keep people's ages sensible and allow a few genetics references that shouldn't really be there.

Title is from Wilfred Owen's poem; it was a placeholder and then it stuck.

When she was younger she watched people carefully in order to become them, but it was like memorising a song in another language: the imitation was perfect but she never bothered to learn what it meant. )

Just to let you know: the journal formerly known as mercurial_wit has been renamed fahye_fic, due to the author reaching the end of her patience when it comes to having two separate fandom pseudonyms. All old links etc. should still work :)

11:30 am - [Thor: we may be better strangers]
Title: we may be better strangers
Fandom: Thor
Rating: PG
Word count: 4933
Notes: The first time someone mentioned this movie to me I wasn't aware of its comic book status (who's got two thumbs and has never read a single superhero comic in her life? this girl) and was like, OH MAN, NORSE MYTHOLOGY, THIS IS GONNA BE GREAT. Because -- spoilers, spoilers, whatever, I suppose the time has come -- my name is Freya, pleased to meet you, I have never seen a movie featuring a character with my name. And then I found out that there was NO FREYA in the damn movie. Sob sob.

I enjoyed the film a lot, but I was most interested in the whole idea of translating a mythology into a functioning other-planet society full of people. So I wondered what the goddess Freyja (responsible for love, and fertility, and apparently also cats) would become if you translated her, and also what a fertility specialist does all day in a society that is clearly warrior-centric.

Plus, just like the rest of fandom, I wanted an excuse to write about Loki's ENORMOUS FAMILY-RELATED ISSUES.

And this is what came of that. It's not at all romantic, and I quite like that about it, although I suppose if you Magic-Eyed the thing you might catch a glimpse of Loki/Freyr and Loki/Thor/ISSUES. It also doesn't have any cats in it, though it does feature quite a few bits and pieces of myth, mixed in with the things that I just plain made up.

Title is from As You Like It because that is, as ever, how I roll.

Freyja was born after, but in the same hour as, her brother. If anyone puts them in any order, it's purely by accident. )

6:01 pm - [Inception: and little other care hath she]
Title: and little other care hath she
Fandom: Inception
Rating: PG-13
Word count: 2857
Notes: This is for [info]metonymy, who won my fic-writing services by her generosity in the [info]help_japan auction. We have shared interests that include mythology, Arthur/Ariadne/Eames and globetrotting, so this was a pleasure to write! Many thanks to [info]ineptshieldmaid who stepped up like a champ for a last-minute beta.

Despite living in and loving Sydney for many years, I think this is the first time I've used it as the main setting for a story. As you will probably guess, I miss it (and its food) enormously.

Title from 'The Lady of Shalott'.

Every craft has its own language and she's already fluent in her own, so it's nice, in a way, to be starting at the beginning again. )

9:23 am - help_japan auction
Sorry, not a fic post. HOWEVER. I though I'd mention on this ficblog that I'm offering 2000+ words of fic for the [info]help_japan auction, with a starting bid of $5.

The thread is here.

I've listed these fandoms -- Avatar: The Last Airbender, eyai, White Collar, Inception, Harry Potter, Community, Sherlock.

...but if there's something else you want, feel free to comment here and ask if I'll write it!

Title: The Manor House
Fandom: Inception
Word count: 23,636
Illustrations by: [info]inknose
Notes: Well, this one's been a marathon. Anyone who knows me will think it should have been easy -- yeah, yeah, another control-freak character -- but this story surprised me by taking 5,000 words to work out what shape it would have, and then changing its mind a little at 12,000 and finally needing almost another 12,000 to achieve it.

I owe great thanks to [info]apiphile, who came up with the idea of personality architecture in the first place, and [info]littledust, beta extraordinaire, who gave this its sadly accurate alternative title: Symbolism Is Fun. Thanks also to everyone who listened to me bitch about how hard it is to write a love story from the perspective of someone who isn't aware that it is, in fact, a love story.

And of course I am eternally grateful to [info]inknose for agreeing to lend her talents in bringing some of the dreamscapes to life, working through thick and thin and computer crises. She's an extraordinarily talented artist and I'd hire her as my Architect any day.

Enjoy!

12:09 am - [HP: pick your apple]
Title: pick your apple (take a bite)
Fandom: Harry Potter
Rating: PG-13
Word count: 4328
Notes: Directly after watching the HBP movie I wrote a story called The Game of Kings. This is a sequel to that one, basically, and grew out of a wonderful email exchange with [info]pogrebin. A lot of the good ideas in here are hers :) It sat around half-done for months and months and I've finally dusted it off and finished it; it's set between the events of HBP and DH, so I wanted it completed before the next movie is released.

Title taken from 'Everybody's Got The Right', from the glorious Sondheim musical that is Assassins. Yeah, I figure that's just about the right level of irony for this story.

When Draco comes down to breakfast there's a smell of vinegar in the air and a dead rat on his seat. )

8:53 pm - [Inception: OH&S]
Title: OH&S
Fandom: Inception
Rating: PG
Word count: 2753
Notes: OH HO. AND YOU THOUGHT I WAS KIDDING.

Here it is! Everything you've ever wanted to know about IV access and lots of things you didn't. This fic is a direct result of my medical degree, up to and including the fact that the majority of what Yusuf says about neural sleep-state transitions is perfectly scientifically true. Including the word 'endosomnogen', which I didn't invent, but kind of wish I had.

I needed to write something purely silly as an antidote to my epically long and in-no-way-ridiculous WIP. This contains lots of Arthur/Eames and also Ariadne/Saito because apparently I ship that now, THANKS A LOT, [info]foreverdirt. It was unbelievably fun to write.

It's always the most experienced dreamers who get blasé about the process and start falling into bad habits. )

10:16 pm - [Inception: autoimmunity]
Title: Autoimmunity
Fandom: Inception
Rating: PG
Word count: 5590
Notes: Eames, before and after. You can tell I wrote this fic because it contains medical metaphors, psychiatry nicked from William Rivers, and references to Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead.

A whole lot of Arthur snuck into it because Arthur is BADASS and I love him, but the story is basically as gen as it can be given that I believe wholeheartedly in the queerness of Eames. (My brain's attitude to this fandom is apparently: shipping? Fuck shipping. Let's get with the worldbuilding.)

I got this one out in a single day, so it's not as polished as it could be, but I desperately want my brain back. I need it! For studying!

If you're wondering what his first name is, well, SO AM I. The fact that I couldn't make one work suggests that it is in fact so terrible that it would require professional extraction for him to own up to it.

Yeah, let's go with that.

He can always find his true face in mirrors, if he looks hard enough, no matter how many layers deep he goes. )

8:43 am - [Ouran: a wish to assimilate the world]
Title: a wish to assimilate the world
Fandom: Ouran High School Host Club
Rating: R
Word count: 6392
Notes: So... remember this one? No? That's okay, it was a long time ago and I haven't written for Ouran since. But I really liked the character dynamics I set up there, and kept revisiting them in my head, and eventually I knew that I had to offer a peek into what happens next.

It has plot (not really) and scenes during which everyone remains fully clothed and conversing (really) and even some Deep Emotions (really really!). But it’s also full of sex! Often with strong overtones of kink. With perhaps a couple of notable exceptions, I now know more about (this) Kyouya's complex sexuality, and the way he thinks about love, than I do about any other character.

The PLAN was just to dash off a sequel to what remains one of my favourite self-penned fanfics, but you know what they say about plans. Many thanks to [info]myrafur, who provided cheerleading <3

Title from More and More by Margaret Atwood, which is -- apt, I think, for this story.

Kyouya tries, as a general rule, not to reach within himself and start tangling his hands in the complexity of his needs; he lets them surface one by one according to the context, and then he acts on them. )

9:23 pm - [Burton's Alice: jam yesterday]
Title: Jam Yesterday
Fandom: Alice in Wonderland (2010 film)
Rating: PG
Word count: 2612
Notes: You don't even have to tell me how much this is not, in any way, what I am meant to be writing, but med school has consumed my free time and my writing-brain and I am just so bloody grateful that I yet retain the ability to finish anything. Anyway, this is all the fault of Anne Hathaway's fantastically messed-up portrayal of the White Queen. I am a sucker for morally confused characters with a penchant for science.

There are lots of references in here from the book Through The Looking Glass and how the Queens were portrayed therein; I've mixed and matched book and movie details to create my very own backstory concoction. Enjoy!

9:32 pm - collabs: Star Trek & White Collar
Recently I've done two fic/art collaborations with [info]lizardspots, and I've realised that I didn't post either here. So! This post contains two fics for the price of one. Links go to the communities we posted to :)

( It was Neal who showed him the problem with trying to solve his wife like an equation, and it's likely that the same approach isn't going to get him anywhere now. )

1:47 am - [White Collar: biconvex]
Title: Biconvex
Fandom: White Collar
Rating: PG-13
Word count: 8663
Notes: The thought process went something like this:

Me: What delightful fun this show is!
Brain: INDEED. WE MUST WRITE FIC.
Me: All right, how about we wait until the Merlin heist AU is finished, and then we work out a lovely OT3 fic with a plot and nice prose?
Brain: Or we could drop everything RIGHT NOW and write a fic with AU elements that is mostly comprised of snappy dialogue!
Me: -- or we could --
Brain: THAT'S SETTLED THEN.

And then I spent ages procrastinating on Wikipedia pages about lens optics because -- well, I'm me. Then I did a huge amount of worldbuilding very fast and then forced myself not to talk about most of it, because exposition-dumps are the enemy of us all, and then I had to trickle bits of it back in again so that the story would make decent amounts of sense.

Enjoy! This is technically not Peter/Neal/Elizabeth but it may as well be, because let's face it, they all love each other to pieces.

There is no Actual Plot, but nobody bothered to inform the wordcount of this fact.

Peter could feel a headache threatening to develop in the Caffrey Zone, which was located an inch above his temples, and had been a close acquaintance of throbbing pain during the last seven years. )

Title: Sleight of Hand
Fandom: Naruto
Rating: PG-13
Word count: 3194
Notes: I wrote this over a year ago for a fanbook ([info]lemontreeparade) that is taking an age to get off the ground, and I've waited for a long time, but I'm not waiting any longer. I want to archive this with the rest of my fic. If people want to buy the fanbook (which will contain a whole heap of stories, all of which -- including this one! -- will be accompanied by gorgeous illustrations) then they can, but I'm posting this now.

5:51 pm - [merlin: miss the train before (3/9)]
Title: Miss The Train Before
Fandom: Merlin
Rating: currently PG
Word count: 6824 for this part
Notes: Yes. I know. I'm a terrible, terrible person. But I now know most of the plot structure (hurrah?) and how many chapters there should be altogether, so hopefully things will move faster from here. At least the Pendragons have finally appeared :) As have some rather silly injokes.

If you know anything at all about electronic security systems, I can't promise that my utter ignorance and artistic embellishment (ie. bullshitting) won't make you weep tears of pain, so, um, sorry about that.

From now on all of the illustrations will be LONDON PORN. Woo! Enjoy [info]ryokophoenix's gorgeous photography.

1:41 pm - [HP: the game of kings]
Title: The Game of Kings
Fandom: Harry Potter
Rating: PG
Word count: 6560
Notes: UM. I don't know what I'm doing in this fandom! Honestly! I just came home from watching HBP with a lot of meta about character parallels swirling around in my head, and then I tripped over half a bottle of red wine and this came flowing out. I wrote the vast majority of it in a single glorious sitting, which I should really try to do more often.

Big thanks to [info]ariastar for feeding me little tidbits of Harry-centric meta when I complained that I could write Draco approximately forever, but was having trouble getting the Boy Who Lived to talk to me.

This fic owes a large debt to [info]pogrebin's story arise on the ruins, which you should definitely read because it's a more original and more interesting fic than this one.

Here you are at the end of the beginning; this year is the axis upon which your fate spins, widdershins, the direction of undoing. )
